I have heard about Mermaid/Mer people books in the blogosphere but hadn't read one ever. Ok, I read the little mermaid by Hans Christian Andersen a few decades ago, but that's it. I wasn't sure what to expect but Everblue definitely surprised me positively.
The book tells the story of the two best friends Ashlyn (Ash) and Tatiana (Tatchi). They want to go to college together, though Tatchi's family isn't supporting at all. Actually there are few weird things going on in Tatchi's family. Then there is an unexpected family emergency, strangers are moving into Tatchi's home and Ash is worried endlessly. At the same time she has to deal with high school life, competitive swimming and her crush on Tatchi's twin brother Fin. And then she learns the family secret.
I really enjoyed reading this book. The story was fast paced. We got to know the main characters which are interesting and likeable. The chapter are written alternately from Ash's and Fin's point of view. This helped understanding them both better and what was going on between them. We got to know about the mer people. The paranormal part is well written und believable (if one can say so in a paranormal context). I like the description and details about the undersea world. It made it come alive.
In addition there a bit of a mystery story going on. Fin and Tatchi's father is on a top secret mission and the two siblings along with their mother have to find their way in undersea kingdom.
The romance between Ash and Fin is very sweet without becoming annoying. And there is a cliffhanger! Which makes me eagerly awaiting the second book in this series, which isn't even announced yet. Overall a very interesting read.
